DK Eyewitness Travel Guide New Orleans Marilyn Wood 9781405370875 Books

We recently did a 4 day short stay in New Orleans. Although focused on the French Quarter, we did make it to the Garden District. Usually, I buy several travel books, but, as the trip was short, I went with just this one. Good choice. The pictures really helped decide what we wanted to see and that we had found it when we got there. Recommendations for hotels and eating places were pretty accurate (as individual tastes and day-to-day changes effect this, I always expect some divergence from what a guide says.) However, the strength was in the sights, maps and history provided. We had a pretty good take on the French Quarter and general NO history before we went (from reading the book.) Because time was short, we were able to hit the hot spots that we wanted to see and had time left over to relax, see the few sights that were further down the list and generally enjoy the atmosphere and culture. This book was so accurate and helpful, I got two of their guides to places in Spain.

DK Eyewitness Travel Guide New Orleans Marilyn Wood 9781405370875 Books Reviews

Eyewitnness has the very best in travel books. I love all of the details especially in reference to architecture, the history and the food. I always grab an Eyewitness and studyup when visiting a new city. Excellent narrative walking tours with this book too.
I love these books. They have great information and pictures in them. They are very easy to understand. This is the fourth DK Eyewitness Travel Guide I have purchased. It has a great laminated pull out map in the back that is going to come in very handy.
New Orleans is my home away from home. I bought this after my first visit and even though the city is laid out so easily to find your way around (square and all), this book had great little bits about the history, the festivals, the culture, and exploring. Definitely a must have before visiting this beautiful city.
We haven't gone on the trip yet so I cannot gauge accuracy, but I am enjoying reading the book. The photos are very good and the details/descriptions are great. I am/was fairly ignorant about NO (have never visited) so I am learning a lot with this book (and without getting bored). The maps, the street index, the reference guides... all very useful/helpful. I may update after the trip but for now I am quite happy.
I will choose a DK book if there is one for the area where we are travelling because I like the style and know where to find things as they are designed similarly. I found all of the usual sections I expect from DK including lots of pictures. I read the sections I find interesting before my trips but then get the most benefit AFTER I return home and learn more about where I visited relaxing and remembering my holiday (this was no exception). I did not purchase another travel guide so I have nothing else for comparison, but I found this book to cover all of the major locations... it certainly covered everywhere us first time visitors wanted to see in our one week stay. As far as I could tell everything was accurate and up to date.
This book, along with every other book in the DK series, details a place where you can visit, offering rich photos and text that will make you want to visit. In the case of this book, I purchased it and it was delivered only about a week before we went to New Orleans. This guide was instrumental in planning my visit, offering me choices on things to do that would be fun, interesting and historical. If you have ever seen or purchased any of DK's book then you know they are really beautiful offering some of the most incredible color photos. I highly, wholeheartedly recommend this book for anyone who is going to New Orleans as well as anyone who wants to learn about New Orleans. It's a beautiful city that is coming back after years of difficulties after Hurricane Katrina and it is a worthwhile place to visit. They need our support out there and you won't be disappointed as there is a lot to do in one of our most historic cities.
This is a wonderful travel guide that is all about New Orleans with beautiful color illustrations, photographs and maps. It gives you a plan on spending four days in Orleans. It has cutaways and floor plans of all the major sights and 3-D aerial views of Orleans most interesting districts. Listed inside is a huge selection, though not all of hotels, restaurants, shops and entertainment venues. There are there specially devised walking tours. Websites for all are included. The book is broken into areas of the city of New Orleans.
Overall, this is a great tour guide to take with you on your trip to New Orleans, whether it is your first time or second. I have no hesitation in recommending this one. Only qualm I have about this guide in that no ratings are available, as found in Frommer's or Fodor's travel guides.
