A MURDERER ON A RAMPAGE * A DEMENTED KILLER STALKING IN THE NIGHT * FOUR HUNDRED CADETS AT THE KILLER’S MERCY Late at night a maniacal killer bent on revenge, sneaks quietly into one of many Quonset Huts in a dark corner of an aging military compound. Carrying a heavy flight bag over his shoulder, he bitterly drops a lifeless body onto a cadet’s empty bunk; signaling the beginning of five weeks of torment and gut-wrenching horror for the four hundred cadets assembled for a summer encampment. Brutal attempts to silence the cadets of Honors Squadron are met with defiance and nightly reconnaissance missions by a crew of cadets attempting to find the lair of the murderer. The forgotten Air Force base, on the shores of Cape Cod, welcomed the cadets into a world of incessant military hazing, competitive physical training and unending torment by Drill Instructors responsible for begetting boys into men. The number one ranked cadet in camp becomes the constant target for the brutes never-ending brutality. Lethal garrote attacks, aging military ordinance exploding suspiciously, rampaging cars assaulting unsuspecting cadets, and rigged buildings hiding horrific secrets, manifests a battle ground on the military installation lost to time.

I heard about this book from a friend. Although I haven't read much in this genre recently, I read a lot of "historical" or "true" crime for college courses and usually find memoirs interesting, so I thought I'd give it a shot. Interestingly, this book reads more like historical fiction than true crime, as it is categorized. If it truly is non-fiction, a little blurb somewhere that explains the author's relationship to the events in the memoir would have been appreciated. I did a quick internet search and tried to find anything about the events online, but came up with nothing--however, that's not really unexpected since the book is set in 1964. I would have loved some "bonus" material, too, if the author was able to scrounge up any of the first source materials (photos from the camp, the original police report, etc.).

The prologue in the beginning of the book shows us the scene just before the cadet's death. To be entirely honest, I read it a couple times and just couldn't follow what was going on. When I re-read it after finishing the book, it made complete sense. I think I struggled because some of the language in the scene hints that the two men are together, but really they are in different locations (for example, why would one man "yell obscenities" if he were sitting alone? Mutter them, perhaps? Or maybe he is yelling at the cadet and the sauna's door is in the locker room? I still don't know!) A few more descriptors to help me navigate the gym's layout (locker room, pool, and sauna) and place each man appropriately alone in his starting location would have helped me a ton.

The first 30% of the book really tried my patience as a reader. The daily life of a military summer camp simply is not all that interesting without some actual plot or character development going on. If I had gotten the book for free, I likely would have abandoned it. But since I bought it, I pressed on. And, I am glad I did.

At 30%, once the murder has occurred, the action really picks up. Interestingly, quite a bit of this action is really just some of the activities of the summer camp. For example, the escape and evasion training was able to get my heart rate up, almost like reading a zombie novel. :-) The author does a really good job of bringing about the cadets paranoia (or not!) throughout the entirety of the rest of the book. The reader is constantly guessing whether or not the boys' minds are playing tricks on them.

One thing that would have improve the book would have been to spend some more time on character development in the beginning. I had a really hard time keeping all the characters straight. Even later in the book, names of characters are thrown about that I swear we've never met, but they are talked about as if they should have some meaning to the reader. We do get bits and pieces of many of the boys' backstories, but only in a very cursory manner for most of them.

All in all, the last 75% of the book was an enjoyable read. I feel like I learned some things about a time and place I knew very little about, and I'd give the author another try sometime.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It kept my interest and the writing itself was very good with the humor in certain places was great. Looking forward to reading more of Bill’s writing.
This was a fast read and kept me interested to the end.
I felt like I was part of the team, visualized the movements of everyone.
More books coming?
Thanks Bill.
Anton.
This one was toe curling suspenseful. If you like a good thriller, this one is a good pick.
Superbly written story that kept me engaged from start to finish! Intelligently constructed with rich characters and solid plot. Highly recommended! I look forward to your next book!!!
Excellent story line. It kept me interested throughout the entire book. The author incorporated numerous twists and turns which made the book both suspenseful and enjoyable.
Compelling suspense story combined with great detail of how a sailor goes through boot camp. First setting the plot of the story, filling in the characters backgrounds and creating the story is first notch. The most compelling parts of the book are the suspense leading up to finding the killer. I am talking about sitting on the edge of your chair suspense. Excellent read from both a story standpoint and a factual standpoint. Looking forward to another book from this author.
